Texans Demand Oversight on AI Projects After Musk's Terafab Tax Break
Residents of Grimes County, Texas, are calling for more control over large AI infrastructure projects following the approval of tax breaks for Elon Musk's Terafab semiconductor factory. Nearly 900 residents signed a petition demanding stricter regulations on projects receiving public incentives, including local oversight, hiring commitments, and pollution controls. The petition was presented to the County Commissioner Court, highlighting concerns about the impact of such projects on the community. SpaceX, which is developing the Terafab factory, has agreed to pay the county $20 million annually, a significant reduction from the property taxes it would otherwise owe. The factory, a joint venture with Tesla and Intel, aims to boost semiconductor production for AI data centers and autonomous technologies.
