Moderate Drought in NYC May Affect Cherry Blossom Season
New York City has entered 'moderate' drought territory, which could potentially shorten the cherry blossom season. Despite recent snowfall, the city has received only 9.63 inches of rain and snow since January 1, significantly below the average of 14.08 inches for this period. This deficit is about 68% of the normal precipitation levels. The lack of moisture is attributed to fewer rain events during the winter months, despite heavy snowfall. Meteorologist Matt Benz from Accuweather notes that while the drought may not drastically impact blooming, it could lead to a shorter duration of blooms. The US Drought Monitor confirmed the moderate drought status as of April 21, 2026.
