Archaeologists Discover 4th-Century Roman Mosaic in UK Farmland
Archaeologists have uncovered a 4th-century Roman mosaic beneath farmland in Devon, UK, as part of the Saving Halberton's Ancient Roman Environment (SHARE) project. The mosaic, composed of thousands of colorful stone cubes arranged in a floral pattern, was found among the ruins of a Roman villa. The site also revealed an elaborate bathhouse with plunge pools and painted plaster walls. The discovery was made during a two-month dig led by the University of Exeter and Cotswold Archaeology, with volunteers assisting. The mosaic is believed to have covered the floor of a reception or dining room, indicating the villa was home to wealthy individuals.
