WHO Updates Dementia Prevention Guidelines, Emphasizes Broader Health and Environmental Factors
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released updated guidelines on reducing the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. These guidelines emphasize that while traditional advice such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and social engagement remains important, they are not sufficient on their own. The WHO's Global Action Plan on the Public Health Response to Dementia highlights the need for a comprehensive approach that includes addressing modifiable risk factors shared with other noncommunicable diseases. The guidelines also introduce new recommendations, such as engaging in mentally stimulating activities and adopting diets like the Mediterranean or DASH diets. Additionally, the WHO identifies air pollution as a significant risk factor for dementia, urging global efforts to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.
