Mother Kuskokwim Tribal Coalition Rejects NovaGold's Corporate Restructuring for Donlin Gold Project
The Mother Kuskokwim Tribal Coalition has issued a strong statement in response to NovaGold Corporation's recent announcement of a corporate restructuring aimed at consolidating ownership of the proposed Donlin Gold project. NovaGold, a new corporation created in Delaware, intends to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, the Coalition asserts that this corporate maneuver does not address the fundamental lack of 'social license' for the project from the communities directly affected. They emphasize that the restructuring does not alter the significant environmental risks associated with the proposed massive open-pit mine, a 315-mile natural gas pipeline, and a 471-foot tailings dam in a seismically active region. These developments are planned for one of Alaska's most vital salmon-producing watersheds, the Kuskokwim River, which is crucial for the subsistence of local communities.
