China Expands Leadership in UN AI Governance, Aims to Bridge Global AI Divide
China has taken a significant step in expanding its leadership role within the Geneva-based UN agency focused on artificial intelligence (AI) governance. This move is part of China's broader strategy to promote more inclusive approaches and enhance practical cooperation to address the global AI divide. In recent years, China has been actively involved in AI cooperation through infrastructure and talent development initiatives. Notably, in 2024, China launched the China-BRICS AI Development and Cooperation Center to foster deeper AI collaboration among BRICS nations. Additionally, Chinese technology companies have contributed to the development of the world's first Lao large language model, exemplifying China's partnership-based approach to AI development.
