AI Mental Health Chatbots Show Empathy but Raise Safety Concerns
A recent scoping review published in npj Digital Medicine highlights the potential and challenges of AI-powered mental health chatbots. These chatbots, which use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), are designed to simulate human dialogue and provide mental health support. The study reviewed 21 interventions across 11 countries, focusing on user experience and intervention design. While these chatbots are praised for their accessibility and empathetic interactions, concerns remain about their safety and clinical effectiveness. The chatbots primarily target issues like depression and anxiety, employing therapeutic mechanisms such as mindfulness and cognitive restructuring. However, the study notes that the personalization and empathy offered by these chatbots do not always lead to improved clinical outcomes or sustained use.
