UK Government's Crackdown on Subscription Traps to Save Consumers £400m Annually
The UK government has announced new measures aimed at saving consumers approximately £400 million annually by addressing unwanted and misleading subscription practices, known as subscription traps. These reforms, introduced by the Department for Business and Trade, require businesses to provide clear information before sign-up, issue reminders before trials end, and offer straightforward cancellation options. The initiative targets the issue of free trials rolling into costly contracts without clear consent and unexpected auto-renewals. The measures are part of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 and are expected to be implemented by spring 2027.
