NTSB Releases Preliminary Report on Fatal Utah Firefighting Helicopter Crash
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued a preliminary report detailing the final moments before a firefighting helicopter crashed in central Utah, killing both pilots. The incident involved a Sikorsky CH-54A Skycrane, which was carrying water for a planned drop on the Widemouth 2 Fire. According to the report, the crew made a right turn for another pass over the target area when they reported a problem and issued a Mayday call. Seconds later, the helicopter struck rising terrain near Cove Fort. A post-crash fire consumed a significant portion of the aircraft. The crash, which occurred on August 7, killed Miles Elliott of Porterville, California, and Christopher Andersen, 64, of Stateline, Nevada. Both pilots were employed by Helicopter Transport Services, operating under a contract with the U.S. Forest Service.
