RMIT University Develops Dual-Bubble Technique for Enhanced Microplastic Removal in Wastewater
Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have introduced a dual-bubble approach using micro- and nanobubbles to significantly improve the removal of microplastics from wastewater. This method, which can be implemented by wastewater treatment plants without major infrastructure changes, optimizes existing conditions such as air pressure, saturation time, and bubble size. The approach enhances the dissolved air flotation process, a common water treatment method, by combining microbubbles and nanobubbles to increase particle removal efficiency. The study found that using both types of bubbles together resulted in over 90% removal rates of microplastics, outperforming systems that used either type alone. This development addresses the growing issue of microplastic pollution, which poses risks to ecosystems and human health.
