Hurricane Lowell brings heavy rain and strong winds to Hawaii

Hurricane Lowell, a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (177 km/h), is currently passing west of Hawaii, particularly impacting the islands of Kauai and Niihau. The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for Kauai County and a tropical storm warning for Oahu. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, with totals of 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) for Kauai and up to 24 inches (61 cm) in isolated areas. The Big Island could see an additional 3 to 8 inches (7 to 20 cm) of rain, while Oahu and Maui may receive 2 to 5 inches (5 to 13 cm). The storm is also causing life-threatening surf, rip currents, and the potential for tornadoes and waterspouts.

Hurricane Lowell Forces School and Office Closures in Hawaii

Hurricane Lowell is approaching Hawaii, bringing hurricane-force winds, flash flooding, damaging surf, and the possibility of tornadoes. As of Monday night, the storm was located 135 miles southwest of Lihue, Kauai, with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph. It is moving north-northeast at 18 mph and is expected to pass near or just west of Niihau overnight into Tuesday. The Hawaii State Department of Education has announced the closure of all public schools and offices on Oahu and in Kauai County for Tuesday, 8th September. Governor Josh Green has also ordered the closure of state and county offices, courts, and other government facilities in the affected areas.

Hawaii Teen Discovers Coconut Fungi Can Filter Ocean Plastic and Sunscreen, Wins Science Fair

Vera Wang, a senior at Kaiser High School in East Honolulu, has discovered that fungi found in coconut husks possess the ability to biodegrade plastic and sunscreen. This breakthrough earned her multiple awards at the Hawaiʻi State Science & Engineering Fair and qualified her for the International Science & Engineering Fair. Wang's research began during her sophomore year when she designed an ocean filter made from coconut byproduct waste, inspired by traditional Polynesian weaving, to remove pollutants from surface water. Realizing the need for responsible disposal of these pollutants, she explored the fungal communities within coconut husks. Her experiments in Anthony Amend’s lab at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa revealed that these fungi can decompose sunscreen and plastic. Genetic testing further indicated that some of these fungal species might be previously uncharacterized, as they did not match any entries in the world's largest reference database of known genes and genomes.
