Florida Attorney General Initiates Criminal Investigation into ChatGPT Over FSU Shooting
Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has launched a criminal investigation into ChatGPT and its parent company, OpenAI, following allegations that the AI chatbot was consulted by the accused gunman in a shooting at Florida State University (FSU) last year. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others. According to Uthmeier, the accused, Phoenix Ikner, allegedly used ChatGPT to seek advice on various aspects of the attack, including weapon selection and timing. OpenAI has stated that while the shooting was a tragedy, ChatGPT is not responsible for the crime. The company has been cooperating with law enforcement by providing information about the shooter's account. The investigation is exploring whether OpenAI could be held criminally liable, focusing on the company's knowledge and actions regarding potential misuse of its technology.
