Canadian Government Reports Increase in Senior Workforce Participation Amid Rising Living Costs
The Government of Canada has reported a significant increase in workforce participation among seniors aged 65 and over, driven by rising living costs and financial stability concerns. Statistics Canada noted that 2025 marked the fifth consecutive year of increasing participation rates, which have now exceeded pre-pandemic levels and are the highest recorded since tracking began in 1976. This trend is expected to continue, with the proportion of seniors in the workforce projected to rise from 18.8% in 2025 to 22.5% by 2035. Many seniors are working beyond age 65 due to financial necessity, often logging an average of 16 hours per week and holding multiple jobs. Employers are advised to review their employment practices to accommodate older workers and reduce legal risks associated with age discrimination.
