New Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic Candidate BWC0977 Clears Phase 1 Trials, Advances with GARDP Support
A new broad-spectrum antibiotic candidate, BWC0977, has successfully completed Phase 1 clinical trials, demonstrating safety and tolerability in healthy volunteers. Developed by Bugworks, a company co-founded by Anand Anandkumar, BWC0977 is designed to combat drug-resistant infections by simultaneously inhibiting two bacterial enzymes crucial for DNA replication: DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Furthermore, it is engineered to reduce vulnerability to bacterial efflux pumps, a common mechanism bacteria use to expel antibiotics. The development of BWC0977 has received significant support, including initial investment from CARB-X and a recent commitment of up to $20 million from GARDP (Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership) to advance its clinical development. This innovative approach aims to provide a new option for doctors facing the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance, a problem that personally affected Anandkumar after his father died from a drug-resistant infection.
