Increasing Hail Threat in Central U.S. Raises Concerns
Recent reports highlight a growing concern over hailstorms in the central and eastern United States. According to NPR, weather conditions conducive to producing large hailstones, at least the size of a pool ball, have become more frequent. This trend is particularly noticeable in the Great Plains, where researchers warn that the likelihood of costly hailstorms is increasing as the planet warms. The Insurance Information Institute reported that hail damage contributed to $51 billion in insured losses last year from severe storms, with hail accounting for up to 80% of claims annually. State Farm, a major insurer, has faced numerous lawsuits alleging that it has denied or minimized payouts for hail damage, particularly in Oklahoma, where more than 600 lawsuits are pending. The company has paid over $1 billion for wind and hail damage in Oklahoma over the past two years.
