AIA-Bain Study Reveals Bottlenecks in Private Investment for U.S. Defense Industrial Base
A new study by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and Bain & Company indicates that while money is flowing into defense technology firms, critical areas such as minerals, semiconductors, and solid rocket motors remain underfunded within the U.S. industrial base. The study highlights a significant increase in venture capital funding for defense, which has grown tenfold since 2019, reaching approximately $10 billion in 2025. However, other funding sources, particularly private equity, are largely untapped by defense companies, with annual private equity participation in defense remaining relatively small, between $1 billion and $3 billion. Most private equity investments are directed towards companies with substantial commercial sector business, such as aerospace or industrials.
