IRS Identity Protection PIN Program Enhances Taxpayer Security Against Identity Theft
The IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number designed to safeguard taxpayers from identity theft and prevent fraudulent tax returns. This unique PIN is issued by the IRS to individuals who are required to file a tax return or possess a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). The program, initially launched in 2011, provides an additional layer of security by requiring the IP PIN to be entered when filing a tax return, ensuring that only the legitimate taxpayer can submit their return. Taxpayers can obtain an IP PIN by logging into their IRS online account, navigating to the 'Tools' tab, and following the instructions to verify their identity. The IRS emphasizes the importance of keeping the IP PIN confidential, storing it securely, and updating it periodically, ideally every five years or if a compromise is suspected. In case of a compromised IP PIN, taxpayers are advised to contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit immediately.
