U.S. Air Force Takes Over Military GPS Receiver Program Amid Technical Challenges
The U.S. Air Force has assumed control of the Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) program, previously managed by the Space Force, to address ongoing technical challenges and delays. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center will now oversee the development, integration, and sustainment of equipment capable of receiving the M-code, an encrypted military GPS signal. This move aims to streamline the modernization effort, which has faced issues with hardware and software integration, particularly in meeting encryption and anti-jamming requirements. The Space Force will continue to operate the GPS satellite constellation, while the Air Force will manage the equipment necessary for military platforms to utilize the signal.
