Ohio Sikh Community Embraces Tradition and Modernity Amid Challenges
In Ohio, the Sikh community is actively preserving its cultural and religious traditions while integrating into American society. This dual identity is exemplified by families like that of Agam Singh Brar, who balance Sikh values at home with American life outside. Photojournalist Akash Pamarthy has been documenting the lives of Sikhs in Ohio since 2023, highlighting their resilience and community spirit. The Sikh faith, originating in the Punjab region of India, is deeply rooted in principles of equality, resilience, and service. Despite historical challenges, including displacement during India's partition and violence in 1984, the community has maintained its identity. In the U.S., Sikhs have faced discrimination, particularly after 9/11, but continue to contribute positively to society.
