NASA Explores Dynamic Airspace Configurator to Modernize National Airspace System
NASA is actively researching the Dynamic Airspace Configurator (DAC) as a new operational paradigm to transform the National Airspace System (NAS). The current NAS, an interconnected system of airports, air traffic facilities, and airways, is nearing its capacity limits due to increasing traffic demand. DAC proposes to shift from a static, structured airspace to a dynamic one that can adapt to user demand, changing weather conditions, traffic congestion, and a diverse aircraft fleet. The research focuses on three main components: strategically organizing airspace and creating new classes, dynamically reconfiguring airspace to accommodate fluctuating demand, and developing generic airspace designs to promote interchangeability among facilities and controllers. This initiative is part of the NextGen concept, aiming for a future system managed with four-dimensional (4D) aircraft trajectories and continuously adjusted airspace structures and controller resources.
