Northwest Maritime has been awarded $1.5 million in Congressionally directed spending to advance its Blue Schools Initiative. This funding, championed by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), marks the first time Northwest Maritime has received federal support for this specific initiative, despite previous requests. The award will be used to fund a pilot program for high school students, focusing on developing workforce skills in maritime industries across three main pathways: vessel operations, marine construction, and marine resources. According to Northwest Maritime CEO Jake Beattie, the investment aims to build upon existing maritime education and workforce efforts in Washington, connecting partners and making it easier for young people to discover maritime careers.
