Los Angeles to Implement Speed Cameras in Effort to Reduce Traffic Fatalities
Los Angeles city leaders have approved the installation of 125 speed cameras across the city's 15 districts as part of a five-year pilot program aimed at reducing traffic fatalities. The initiative, authorized by a 2023 bill, seeks to address the high number of traffic deaths, with speed being a significant factor. The cameras will be installed from now until July, covering areas from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro. Once operational, drivers will have a 60-day grace period before fines are issued for exceeding speed limits by 11 mph or more. The fines range from $50 to $500, depending on the speed over the limit. The program also includes a diversion option for low-income violators, allowing them to enroll in a payment plan or perform community service instead of paying fines.
