Indonesia's Immigration Department Reviews Work Visas Amid Digital Nomad Influx
Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration is currently reviewing its work visa policies and considering new tax regulations in response to the increasing number of foreign digital nomads in the country, particularly in popular areas like Bali. Director General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, highlighted the regulatory challenges posed by the presence of these remote workers, who live in Indonesia but work for overseas employers. The existing visa framework assumes local employment, creating a dilemma for authorities on how to categorize and tax these individuals. The government is collaborating with various ministries, including the Directorate General of Taxes, to explore potential solutions. The review aims to address issues such as residence permit violations and untaxed economic activities while balancing the economic contributions of digital nomads to local sectors like housing and dining.
