Michelin-Starred Chef Faces Legal Action for Serving Ant-Infused Sorbet in South Korea
A Michelin-starred chef in Seoul is facing legal action for serving a sorbet dessert topped with ants, which is illegal under South Korea's Food Sanitation Act. The chef, whose name has not been disclosed, reportedly used gourmet edible ants imported from the U.S. and Thailand, believing them to be a legal ingredient. The ants were listed on the menu, and about 60% of diners chose the topping. However, South Korea only approves 10 insect species for consumption, and ants are not among them. Prosecutors are seeking a one-year prison sentence and a 20 million won fine, citing that some imported ants exceeded heavy metal limits.
