ArXiv Implements Ban on Authors for AI-Generated Research Misuse
ArXiv, a prominent open repository for preprint research, has announced a new policy to address the misuse of large language models (LLMs) in scientific papers. The repository, which is widely used in fields such as computer science and mathematics, will impose a one-year ban on authors if their submissions contain evidence of unverified AI-generated content. This decision follows a rise in low-quality, AI-generated papers and aims to ensure the integrity of research shared on the platform. Thomas Dietterich, chair of arXiv’s computer science section, stated that submissions with 'hallucinated references' or unverified AI content will trigger the ban. Authors will also be required to have future submissions accepted by a reputable peer-reviewed venue before posting on arXiv. The policy is not a blanket ban on AI use but emphasizes author responsibility for content accuracy.
