Alzheimer's Blood Biomarker %p-tau217 Shows Consistent Tracking of Brain Amyloid Across Racial Groups in Global Study
A large global study has provided new evidence supporting the use of the blood biomarker %p-tau217 as an initial screening tool for elevated brain amyloid levels in preclinical Alzheimer's disease trials. The findings, published in JAMA Neurology, indicate that the relationship between %p-tau217 levels and brain amyloid was largely similar across various racial groups. The study, which included data from 15,612 adults aged 55 to 80 across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America, found that while %p-tau217 levels were generally lower among Asian, Black, and Hispanic participants compared to White participants, the biomarker's correlation with brain amyloid remained consistent. This consistency supports its utility as a screening tool, even as it raises questions about factors influencing biomarker levels and dementia risk across diverse populations.
