Quebec Mining Company Fined $100M for Water Pollution
ArcelorMittal Mining Canada has been fined $100 million for releasing harmful substances into fish-bearing waters at its Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mining complexes in Quebec. The fine, the largest ever under the Fisheries Act, comes after the company pleaded guilty to 100 counts of pollution violations. The infractions, which involved the discharge of nickel and zinc, primarily occurred before 2019. As part of the settlement, most of the fine will go to the federal Environmental Damages Fund, and ArcelorMittal will also cover investigation costs. The company has since invested in infrastructure improvements to address water issues and prevent future violations.
