Activists Encircle MSC Containership in Mediterranean to Protest Israeli Shipments
A group of activists, known as the Global Summud Flotilla, has staged a protest against an MSC containership in the Mediterranean Sea. The activists, using approximately 20 sailboats, encircled the MSC Maya, a large containership registered in Panama, while it was sailing between Libya and Malta on April 20. The flotilla, which began its journey from Barcelona on April 15, aims to support Gaza and draw attention to the situation of Palestinian refugees. The activists claim that the MSC Maya is transporting strategic materials to Israeli ports. During the protest, they managed to slow down the ship and force it to alter its course slightly, resulting in additional fuel consumption and time delays. The action was inspired by dockworkers who have refused to handle ships carrying arms shipments to Israel. The group is calling for a halt to arms transfers to Israel and plans to continue their efforts.
