U.S. Department of Energy Initiates $215 Million Competition for Usable Quantum Computers by 2028
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a $215 million competition aimed at developing quantum computers that are practical for scientific research. The initiative seeks to have early versions of these machines operational by 2028. Unlike traditional computers that use binary digits (bits), quantum computers utilize quantum bits (qubits) which can exist in more complex states, theoretically enabling them to solve highly intricate problems significantly faster. These problems include advanced cryptography, detailed simulations of biological and engineering processes, financial modeling, and potentially artificial intelligence and machine learning. Tanner Crowder, quantum information science lead and senior technical adviser for advanced scientific computing research in the DOE’s Office of Science, emphasized that the goal is to produce prototypes capable of scaling into scientifically relevant machines that can perform meaningful scientific calculations within the DOE's mission space.
