Valero Energy Shuts Texas Refinery Following Explosion at Diesel Unit
Valero Energy Corporation has shut down its 380,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, after an explosion and fire occurred at a diesel hydrotreater unit. The incident took place at the 47,000-barrel-per-day unit, causing a significant disruption in the region. The explosion was reportedly heard up to 11 miles away. The shutdown was deemed necessary to contain the fire, which continued to burn for nearly five hours after the explosion. The refinery also lost water supply and steam, complicating firefighting efforts. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Diesel hydrotreaters are crucial for removing sulfur from motor fuels to comply with U.S. environmental regulations. Valero's Port Arthur facility is the company's largest refinery, located 86 miles east of Houston.
