Brazil and Peru Collaborate to Protect Indigenous Border Lands
Brazil's Ministry of Indigenous Peoples has announced a memorandum of understanding with Peru's Ministry of Culture to enhance the protection of Indigenous territories along their shared border. This agreement, expected to be formalized soon, aims to establish a framework for information sharing and coordinated protection efforts. The announcement follows recent incidents where armed men invaded Ashaninka Indigenous lands, highlighting the urgent need for protection. The Ashaninka territory, spanning the Brazil-Peru border, faces threats from gangs and drug traffickers exploiting the region for illegal activities. The Brazilian Army has increased its presence in the area to address these security concerns.
