Trump Administration's Deportation Policy Faces Criticism as Latin Americans Return from Congo
More than half of the 15 Latin Americans deported to Congo under the Trump administration's immigration policies have returned to their home countries. This development follows a series of deportations to third countries, which have been criticized as a legal loophole to indirectly force asylum seekers back to their home countries. The deportees, including four Peruvians and three Colombians, were assisted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through its Assisted Voluntary Return program. This program covers travel costs and logistics for migrants who consent to return to their home countries. Despite U.S. federal courts granting protections against removal due to potential persecution, some migrants felt compelled to return, raising concerns about the lack of viable alternatives.
