Swiss Solar Panels from 1982 Remain Operational, Highlighting Longevity of Photovoltaic Technology
A solar installation on a Swiss rooftop, which began feeding electricity into the grid in 1982, continues to produce power more than four decades later. This particular array, known as the TISO array in Canobbio, Switzerland, originally comprised 288 panels totaling 10.6 kilowatts. By 2024, 48 of these original modules were still active, despite the system being reconfigured and moved to a different roof in 2008. While the panels themselves have demonstrated remarkable durability, the surrounding equipment has not fared as well, with the site requiring five inverter replacements over its operational life. This case study underscores the long-term resilience of photovoltaic panels compared to other components of a solar energy system.
