Wyandotte County Inmate's Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Sheriff and Deputies
The family of Charles Adair, a Wyandotte County jail inmate who died after a deputy knelt on his back, has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit. The suit names Sheriff Daniel Soptic, six deputies, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas. It alleges that Adair's constitutional rights were violated, leading to his death by mechanical asphyxiation. Deputy Richard Fatherley, charged with second-degree murder, is accused of using an unauthorized prone restraint. The lawsuit claims Adair, diagnosed with schizophrenia and suffering from a serious leg infection, showed signs of mental distress before his death.
