Montgomery Switches Public Transportation Provider to Via Transportation Amid Service Concerns
Montgomery, Alabama, is transitioning its public transportation services to Via Transportation, effective November 1, replacing the current provider, Transdev. Montgomery City Council President 'CC' Calhoun anticipates that existing public transit employees will be retained under the new management. The city also has new buses budgeted, contingent on federal assistance, to upgrade its fleet. This change comes as the city's public transportation system has experienced a decline in ridership, with passenger trips for the 2026 fiscal year projected to be nearly 4% lower than in 2024. Over the past two fiscal years, the system recorded just over 480,000 passenger trips. Passengers have reported significant issues with the current service, including frequent breakdowns, driver shortages, and extended delays, leading to missed appointments and prolonged travel times. Via Transportation is a global company, serving approximately 800 cities worldwide.
