Big Island Recovers from Hurricane Lala as Tropical Storm Moke Passes Without Major Impact
Hawai‘i Island is continuing its recovery from the devastating effects of Hurricane Lala, which caused significant damage and claimed two lives in the Ka‘ū District. Concerns were raised last week as Tropical Storm Moke approached the island, with the National Hurricane Center warning of potential life-threatening flooding in already saturated areas. However, Moke weakened and shifted south, sparing the island from further significant damage. The National Weather Service canceled the flood watch on Monday afternoon as Moke moved over 500 miles west of Hilo. Sporadic downpours were reported, but no major rainfall or flooding occurred. Recovery efforts, including road repairs, power restoration, and water supply fixes, are now the primary focus for local authorities and utility crews.
