AI's Potential Risks Highlighted by Experts Amid Concerns Over Political and Social Impacts
Two experts, Michael Laser and Mary Nichols, have expressed concerns over the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on society. Laser, an author, has been using AI to learn French, noting some positive aspects but emphasizing the negatives such as potential mass unemployment, intellectual property theft, and environmental damage. Nichols, chair of the California Air Resources Board, has highlighted the use of AI in political campaigns, which she believes could undermine public trust in elections and political systems. Both experts agree that the benefits of AI are outweighed by its potential costs, calling for more research and controlled experiments to manage its power. They warn that without regulation, AI could enable tech billionaires to gain disproportionate power, urging Congress to enact limits on its use.
