New Study Links Insomnia to Increased Risk of Stroke, Dementia, and Mental Health Issues
A new study, published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, suggests a link between insomnia and an increased risk of major health problems, including stroke, dementia, and various mental health conditions. Researchers from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland analyzed approximately 20 comprehensive review studies, encompassing millions of participants globally, to assess the impact of insomnia on health. The findings indicate that individuals with insomnia have a 26% higher risk of stroke and are more likely to experience depression and attempted suicide compared to those without the sleep disorder. Additionally, the study found a nearly 30% higher likelihood of hospitalization for any reason among people with insomnia. While the study establishes associations, it does not definitively prove that insomnia directly causes these health issues.
