California Introduces DROP Tool to Enhance Privacy Protections
California has launched the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP), a tool designed to help residents protect their privacy by allowing them to request data brokers to delete their personal information and stop selling it. The tool simplifies the process of opting out of data sales, reaching over 600 registered data brokers in the state. The initiative is part of the Delete Act, aimed at making privacy laws more user-friendly. The California Privacy Protection Agency oversees the tool, which officially launched on January 1, 2026, with compliance required by August 1. The tool addresses the challenge of managing personal data in an era where data brokers frequently buy and sell information.
