Ventura Police Arrest Two in Elderly Scam Case, Prevent Further Exploitation
Two individuals, Shaohua Sun and Yanwen Gu, have been arrested and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit elder abuse in Ventura County. The scam involved deceiving an elderly man into believing his credit union account was linked to illegal activities, prompting him to withdraw $25,000 and hand it over to the scammers. The scheme was so successful that the perpetrators attempted to defraud the same victim again, this time asking for $50,000. However, the victim, realizing the deception, contacted the police, leading to the arrest of the scammers during a sting operation. The Ventura Police Department's Street Crimes Unit played a crucial role in stopping the scam before further exploitation could occur.
