Farming Systems Trials Reveal Insights into Crop Rotations and Sustainability
Comprehensive farming systems research in Australia is uncovering new insights into profitable and sustainable crop rotations across various rainfall zones. Led by Dr. Matthew Knowling from Adelaide University, the research involves trials at nine sites in South Australia and Victoria. These trials aim to understand how different crop sequences affect farm profitability and sustainability. The project evaluates a range of cropping systems, including baseline systems and alternative rotations, to identify strategies that improve productivity and sustainability. Initial results from the first three years of trials indicate that baseline systems generally perform well in terms of profit, with adaptive systems also showing high gross margins.
