AI Data Centers Face Local Opposition Amid Environmental Concerns
The debate over the construction of AI data centers in the United States is intensifying, with local communities increasingly opposing these projects due to environmental concerns. Recently, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order halting the construction of the state's largest data centers for a year, marking the first such moratorium in the nation. This move reflects a broader trend where local zoning boards are becoming battlegrounds for AI-related infrastructure, as more than a dozen projects have been blocked or delayed. The opposition is largely driven by worries about the environmental impact of these centers, which are seen as consuming significant natural resources. According to a March Gallup poll, 71% of American adults oppose the construction of AI data centers in their areas, primarily due to environmental concerns.
