Hawaii Public Schools Experience Eighth Consecutive Year of Student Enrollment Decline
Hawaii's public school system has recorded its eighth consecutive year of declining student enrollment, with the total number of students dropping below 150,000 for the first time in at least a decade. This fall, public schools enrolled 147,656 students, nearly a 2% decrease from the previous year. A decade ago, enrollment stood at nearly 170,000 students. The state education department attributes this ongoing decline primarily to falling birth rates and families with young children moving out of the state. While the overall trend is downward, student enrollment changes vary across the state, with some communities experiencing growth, such as Kamali'i Elementary School on Maui (12% increase) and Wai'anae Elementary School on O'ahu (14% increase). Conversely, schools like Farrington High School and DreamHouse 'Ewa Beach saw significant drops. Charter schools, however, continued to see growth, enrolling over 13,400 students this fall.
