Spain's Digital Nomad Visa Offers Significant Tax Advantages Over Non-Lucrative Visa for High Earners
Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), introduced in 2023 under the Startup Law, is specifically designed for remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs whose income originates from outside Spain. It offers an initial duration of one to three years and is renewable in two-year increments. A key advantage of the DNV is its eligibility for the Beckham Law tax regime, which allows for a flat 24% tax rate on Spanish-source income up to €600,000, and generally exempts foreign-source income from Spanish taxation for up to six years. In contrast, the traditional Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) prohibits work activity and taxes worldwide income at progressive rates that can exceed 45%. For professionals earning above approximately €60,000 annually, the DNV with Beckham Law election can result in significantly lower tax burdens, potentially saving tens of thousands of euros annually compared to the NLV.
