UK Manufacturers Face Challenges in Scaling AI Adoption, Report Warns
A recent report highlights that UK manufacturers, despite having strong capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), are struggling to move beyond the pilot stage in deploying AI technologies at scale. The report, authored by Professor Chris Dungey, emphasizes the gap between the UK's AI capabilities and its industrial adoption, warning that the country risks falling behind international competitors like Germany, the United States, Japan, and China. The report identifies several barriers to AI adoption, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including legacy production systems, fragmented data, and workforce capability gaps. It proposes a national 'Scan-Pilot-Scale' framework to accelerate AI adoption, focusing on workforce engagement and skills development.
