Marine Corps Honors Sgt. Freddy Gonzalez for Heroic Valor in Vietnam
The story of Sgt. Alfredo 'Freddy' Gonzalez, a Marine Corps hero, is being highlighted as a symbol of Latino valor on Memorial Day. Gonzalez, who grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, served with distinction in the Vietnam War. Despite his small stature, he was known for his tenacity and leadership skills, earning all-district honors in football during high school. After enlisting in the Marine Corps, Gonzalez was deployed to Vietnam, where he excelled as a squad leader. Upon returning to the U.S., he became an instructor but chose to return to Vietnam after learning of an ambush that killed many of his former men. In Vietnam, he took command of a platoon, a role typically held by a lieutenant, due to a shortage of officers. Gonzalez's bravery was most evident during the Battle of Hue, where he risked his life to save a fellow Marine and led his platoon through intense combat, ultimately sacrificing his life on February 4, 1968.
