Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman Opposes Revocation of TPS for Salvadorans, Citing Economic Contributions
Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, a former U.S. Congressman, has publicly expressed his opposition to the revocation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadorans. This statement was made in Latino media outlets, highlighting the significant economic contributions of the Latino community in the greater Denver metropolitan area. Mayor Coffman's administration has also maintained a clear separation between the local police department and immigration authorities. Aurora is home to an ICE detention center, and the mayor has previously gained attention for spending nights in shelters for the unhoused. The Salvadoran community is the second-largest Latino group in Aurora, following the Mexican community. This stance comes as Mayor Coffman recently hosted the Grito de Dolores ceremony for the third consecutive time, an event organized with the Consul General of Mexico, Pavel Meléndez, to celebrate Mexican national holidays and acknowledge the city's multicultural nature.
