Eastern Shore of Virginia Experiences Drought Relief with Recent Rainfall; More Expected This Weekend
The Eastern Shore of Virginia has seen significant improvement in drought conditions over the past month due to multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield. These weather events have resulted in above-normal rainfall across much of eastern Virginia, leading to a one to two-category improvement in drought severity. Approximately one-third of the broader Wakefield forecast area still experiences moderate to severe drought, but conditions are considerably better than earlier in the summer. The recent rainfall has also positively impacted crops and pastures, and 28-day average streamflows in most river basins have returned to normal levels. Additional rainfall is anticipated from Friday through Sunday, with forecasts predicting a quarter to a half-inch of rain Friday night and Saturday, and further showers possible through Sunday, potentially adding another half-inch to an inch in some areas.
