Oregon Public University Workers Authorize Strike Amid Stalled Contract Negotiations
Classified workers at Oregon's seven public universities have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike, which could commence as early as September 28. This decision follows months of unresolved contract negotiations between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 503 and university management. A significant 97% of voting union members approved the strike authorization. The SEIU 503 higher education bargaining unit represents approximately 4,600 classified workers who provide essential services across the university system, including dining, student support, facilities maintenance, public safety, and information technology. Key points of contention in the negotiations include management's pay proposals, which the union states are below the rate of inflation, and attempts to remove workplace protections, such as safeguards against job contracting out and employee rights during layoffs.
