Yargıtay Rules on Divorce Case Involving Personal Hygiene, Awards 360,000 TL Compensation
In a landmark decision, the Yargıtay (Court of Cassation) in Turkey has ruled in favor of a woman in a divorce case where the husband's lack of personal hygiene was a central issue. The court found the husband fully at fault for not maintaining personal cleanliness, which included not showering regularly and emitting a strong body odor, despite repeated warnings from his wife. The case was initially brought to the Aile Mahkemesi (Family Court) by the wife, who cited psychological and verbal abuse, as well as the husband's failure to maintain personal hygiene. The court awarded the wife 180,000 TL in material damages and 180,000 TL in moral damages, totaling 360,000 TL. The decision was upheld by the Yargıtay after an appeal.
